Nigeria remains Africa's biggest oil and gas producer, making knowledge of the country's oil and gas laws crucial to foreign and local investors. Cases decided by courts give us better understanding and attaches a level of certainty to the laws enacted by the legislature.
In his Nigerian Oil and Gas Law: Cases, Commentaries, and Materials, Harrison Declan discusses the laws in Nigeria's oil and gas industry, as well as the cases that have decided and interpreted such laws. He also included cases of foreign oil and gas jurisdictions on areas where Nigeria does not have a precedence. Speaking with the author, he noted that the reasons for these inclusion are first, the global nature of the oil and gas industry; second, the discretion of Nigerian courts to rely on foreign cases which decided similar issues; and third, to give a guide to future courts who would at some point be faced with similar issues.
